Butter paper manufacturers

When sourcing butter paper, the most critical technical factor is the GSM (Grams per Square Meter), typically ranging from 28gsm to 60gsm. For high-heat applications like baking, ensure the paper has a silicone coating or is sulfuric acid treated to provide a high grease resistance level (KIT test rating of 1-12). Additionally, verify the tensile strength to ensure the paper does not tear when wrapping oily or moist food products.

For B2B buyers, compliance is non-negotiable. The product must be FDA-approved for the US market or meet EC 1935/2004 regulations for the EU to ensure it is safe for food contact. Look for FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification if your brand prioritizes sustainability, and ensure the supplier provides a Declaration of Compliance (DoC) stating the paper is free from harmful fluorocarbons (PFAS-free).

The choice depends on whether the paper is used for wrapping, baking, or interleaving. For baking (parchment style), the paper must be heat-resistant up to 220°C (428°F). For fast-food wrapping, a lower GSM with high greaseproof density is sufficient. If the paper is for branding purposes, ensure the supplier uses food-grade soy-based inks for custom printing to prevent chemical migration into the food.

During evaluation, perform a grease penetration test by placing oil on the surface for 24 hours; there should be zero leakage. Check the opacity and smoothness; high-quality butter paper should have a uniform texture without pinholes. Finally, test the release properties—food should peel off easily without sticking to the fibers.

The primary risk is moisture damage during sea transit, which can cause the paper to warp or develop mold. Ensure the supplier uses waterproof PE film wrapping and heavy-duty corrugated pallets for shipping. Another risk is specification mismatch, where the GSM delivered is lower than ordered; always mandate a third-party pre-shipment inspection (PSI) to verify weight and quantity.

Focus on volume-based pricing tiers. Since butter paper is a commodity, margins are thin; however, increasing your order to a full 20ft container can reduce shipping costs per unit by 15-20%. Negotiate for free plate-making charges on custom printed orders if the volume exceeds 50,000 sheets, and request Trade Assurance to secure your payment until the goods are verified.

Butter paper is often classified under HS Code 4806 (Vegetable parchment, greaseproof papers). Check for specific anti-dumping duties that may apply between the exporting country and your region. To ensure smooth clearance, ensure the Commercial Invoice clearly states the food-grade status and the GSM, as these details are frequently scrutinized by customs officials.

Always prioritize Audited Suppliers on Made-in-China.com, as these companies have undergone rigorous on-site verification by independent bodies like SGS or Bureau Veritas. Use Escrow-based payment methods and never wire full payments to private bank accounts. Requesting a factory video audit can also help confirm the supplier's production capacity and hygiene standards.
